RTR Status Update

Return to Roots has now been up on Steam Greenlight for a little over a week now, and within just a few days I had gotten a handful of useful feedback. There were also three commonalities in the critique: excellent soundtrack (as expected), competently programmed (why, thank you) and it looks terrible (why thank - well, hmm). I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the aesthetic in terms of enemy design, backgrounds and consistency, since I am clearly no artist. I'm more than open to passing the artistic side off to someone else (or the plural of that) but thus far haven't done much digging beyond asking a couple friends if they'd be interested.

One comment, however, was a little more interesting. I won't quote it, but it made me ask myself, "Why would people want to play this instead of the Mega Man games, from which the gameplay and level design is inspired by/based around?" Prior to the release of the demo, my answers to that question were "It's something different/new and it has a Campaign Editor", but the more I thought about it, the more I felt that it wasn't enough.

I've been playing with the mechanics a bit, and while at its core it's still conceptually the same (you run and you gun and you jump on/over stuff) there's been a bit more added to it, and likely there'll be more to it as time goes on.

These features will be made available in the demo through a patch I plan to release in a couple days. I have a couple things to finish tweaking, followed by some localized testing, and I'll post another announcement and link to the patch when it becomes available.


Return to Roots Demo is Live!

Trying for Friday

So everything at this point is done, but I'm awaiting feedback on something because I like to have options. Also, Friday is likely a better release day than Thursday, anyway. Steam will be seeing more activity, that way.

So releasing the Return to Roots demo didn't happen today, but it's very likely to happen tomorrow. This stuff always ends up being more work than I anticipate, but I've only got about two more hours of prep work, plus whatever paperwork Steam will demand - another hour or two at the most, I reckon. I'll be providing a status update tomorrow regardless of the outcome.


Good news, everyone!

Uh, bad news.

Steam Greenlight is officially live! Unfortunately, I do not have all of the preparations complete to put it up there. As a result, I'll have to delay the demo release of Return to Roots to some time next week, as I'm about to go on a short vacation for a few days.

The good news is, the demo IS actually complete, but I want to do a simultaneous local/Steam release and I want to be available for it so I can address any user questions/concerns.

Tentatively pushing the release date to September 5th. I say tentative because I'm not certain when I'll be returning from my trip, and if I happen to get things done on the 4th, then I'll release it on the 4th.
